I have been teaching languages for 26 years and have run my own language center in Taiwan for 11 of them. I worked in the Dominican Republic, studied in Spain, and have taught students from 75 countries.
Over the years I have become more and more convinced of one thing: a language is only the doorway. Every new language opens up another life. I help people look at the world, at others and at themselves through a different lens.
Today I focus on three things:
Helping language teachers go further
How to design a course, what to do when students won't speak, whether to stay in a school or go independent. I have trained teachers in Chinese-teacher training programs at more than ten Taiwanese universities, including National Tsing Hua University and Tamkang University.
Turning teaching into a business
From teaching on my own to running a language center that has passed its tenth anniversary, I have faced almost every problem along the way: unstable schedules and income, pricing, endless admin work, finding and keeping good teachers, and seasonal enrollment. I share what I learned so others can avoid the same detours.
Cross-cultural communication
After many years of teaching, I keep seeing something counterintuitive: highly proficient students who lack cross-cultural awareness speak fluently yet keep running into walls, while beginners who observe others and adapt often communicate more smoothly.
Language proficiency and communication skills are two different things. I live cross-cultural communication every day in my international marriage, and I speak about it in Chinese, English and Spanish at international polyglot conferences — especially about those moments when you are fluent, yet still misunderstood.
